"I am at two with nature." --Woody Allen

Today I laid on the sidewalk outside my neighbor's house1 in an attempt to become, if not at one with nature, at least a little closer to that.

I took my cell phone.

It worked pretty well (I'm talking about enjoying the outdoors, but the cell phone was also working well). The day was gorgeous, my kids were napping, and I didn't get sunburned. I was out there for a good 30 minutes.

I guess I don't really hate nature. Hate is too strong a word, really. What I hate is being outside. Yes, there is too a difference! I hate the outside when there are bugs, sticky heat, chilly air, and animals. So, yes, that's a lot of nature. It just seems ridiculous when you have the option of conditioned air and tv.

I also hate being outside when I have my kids. And since that is most of the time, I hate being outside most of the time. I am almost paranoid about my kids being lost, hurt, or (and this one takes first place) being taken. I say almost paranoid because, really, it is quite possible. Child predators are everywhere that children go. So, I am anxious and stressed the whole time we're outside. I hate to take my eyes off them to talk or anything else. I think we can all agree that is not enjoyable.

I do like other parts of being outside. I love the beach and the ocean. I love looking at the stars when I'm way out of the city so there are tons and they're super-bright. I love to drive with the windows down (in perfect weather).

Anyway, I'll be out there communing with nature every time the stars align - kids sleeping, perfect weather, nothing good on tv, cell phone reception.

1I laid in front of the neighbor's house because that is where the sun was shining. I had no intention of laying in the shade - too chilly and, really, my house is shady. No need to be shady outside.

Did you at least have a blanket, or did you spend the entire 30 minutes on the hard sidewalk? I don't think I would have lasted that long!

that sounds really nice--laying on your back with the hot sun on your face. what a great way to spend a half hour. i might have to try that--it's like spring weather here!

It doesn't help that you live somewhere with lots of bugs and stickiness. I love Houston. It is green and beautiful but its a little bit harder to be a nature lover there. We used to go camping all the time until we moved there. Lots of bugs, many of them bite, snakes, rodents, roaches the size of your hand, gators, etc. etc. Would I move back if I could... absolutely!

I laid on the concrete, Laura, but not the entire 30 minutes. I walked around on the phone for 15.

I am the same way about the outdoors! My requirement for our future house is a fenced in backyard. Brian thinks that is so dumb. He wants the kids to explore and run around. Everytime I think of them as kids, I wonder how someone didn't die or get taken, but that was then - this is NOW! Now is so dangerous (in my mind at least, maybe for real) So yeah, its so stressful for me being outdoors. It makes me sad that I'm so stressed, but I can't stop my brain from presenting all the options for which the children might be lost.

it shows you were all the registered sex offenders live. so you know who's in the area. I'm MORE than paranoid. You probably already know. but if not here it is.

Houston weather is amazing... if I laid outside here for 30 minutes I'd look like a Titanic victim.

Jen, is that Grobin song about my homeboy Van Gogh? Awesome!! I love it! I have never heard it before and it's making me a little teary eyed.

Yes, Natalee, and it is heart-breakingly beautiful.
